APK listing sites often group games under a “High RTP” category. The label sounds like reassurance, but RTP is a statistical term that is widely misunderstood — and one that cannot be checked from the outside for any APK.

What RTP is

Return to player (RTP) is the share of money staked that a game is designed to give back to players as prizes over a very large number of rounds. It is calculated by the game’s designer from the game’s mathematics — it is not a measurement of any one session.

The UK Gambling Commission, which regulates gaming machines and online games, puts it plainly: RTP is an average achieved over a significant number of game plays, not each time the game is played. A machine showing 85% RTP does not mean you should expect 85 pence back for every £1 you stake in a session.

What RTP is not

• It is not your “earning rate”. A 96% RTP means the game keeps, on average, 4% of everything staked over the long run — in other words, the average player loses.
• It is not a per-session promise. In one evening you can finish far above or far below the average; that variance (volatility) is what makes the game exciting.
• It does not say a win is “due”. Random games have no memory; a losing streak does not make the next round more likely to pay.
• It cannot be checked in advance. A percentage printed on an APK listing is only a claim unless it comes from the game provider’s certified test report.

Why “High RTP Games” categories are unreliable

None of the apps we have catalogued publish a certified RTP report on their source listing. One listing site tags almost every entry “High RTP”, which makes the label meaningless. That is why our catalog has no RTP category. We keep this explainer instead, so the label can be read for what it is.

Where a game genuinely comes from a known studio — for example Spribe’s Aviator, which publishes its RTP inside the game itself — the figure should be taken from the game provider’s own documentation, not from a listing site.

How to read RTP responsibly

1. Treat RTP as the long-run price of playing: 100 minus RTP is the game’s average cut.

2. Set a budget instead of chasing a percentage: decide in advance what you can afford to spend, and stop there.

3. Be suspicious of any app or channel that sells “high RTP” as guaranteed income.
